Photo “Machu Picchu was truly breathtaking”

Cusco is a really  nice city.  Unfortunately Mal was ill for 4 days whilst there.  We had decided against doing a 5-day hike to Machu Picchu which was probably for the best given her condition.

We were also subject to more strikes as the whole of the city shut down for 3 days meaning we could not buy train tickets to get up to Aguas Calientes (the town at the base of Machu Picchu).

Eventually we bought tickets for the Vistadome train.  A train with a perspex roof in order to gain panoramic views on the way up to Aguas Calientes.

We stayed in a hostal in the town and went to the thermal springs which was nice and relaxing - felt like frauds as everyone else there was fresh from the Inca Trail with aching bones!

We got up at 4am to get to Machu Picchu in time for the sun rising.  As it happens it was cloudy so we didn´t see the sunrise over the ruins as we´d hoped but it was still good to get there early as there were less tourists.

Seeing Machu Picchu in real life is amazing! It lived up to expectations and was truly breathtaking.  We spent the whole morning there exploring the ruins as you can see from our photos (lol), and taking in the views.
