From Curitiba, recognized around the world as one of the most eco-conscious and liveable cities on the planet, you can make a wonderful day-trip from the heights of the Parana plateau through the Atlantic Rainforest to the picturesque and delightful colonial town of Morretes. Early in the morning, board the Serra Verde Express for the leisurely 3-hour ride descending the Serra do Mar mountains with a stop at Marumbi and many opportunities for spectacular photos. In Morretes, wander the colonial towns’ few streets and then lunch at one of the picturesque restaurants lining the river running through the town. Try the traditional local speciality of barreado, with many restaurants offering a complimentary tasting of cachaca (sugar cane liquor) to awaken the appetite. If you must, the train returning to Curitiba is at 3:00pm, but it’s much better if you can stay the night in one of magical Morretes’ pousadas (bed-and-breakfast). Linger the evening and savor the charm of the town and the riverside walk, the local live music, and some of friendliest people you’ll ever hope to meet. If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, this area is one of the best in Brasil for eco-tourism, with many trails (easy as well as mountainous), waterfalls, rivers and spectacular flora and fauna in and around the rain forest of Marumbi State Park. And to make a weekend of it, in the nearby bustling port city of Paranagua you can catch a boat for Ilha do Mel, for one of the sweetest eco-paradise islands of Brasil (more in a separate review).
