We took a night bus twelve hours away from Dhaka to the south coast of Cox 's Bazar. This is the famous bay of bengal, a spectacular coastline which at one hundred and fifty kilometers is also the longest beach in the world! The sea was wavy, the sand was hot and plenty of lush green coconut trees around to shade us. I soon joined the Muslim ladies swimming fully clothed. At first, I was apprehensive but the warm balmy weather was too good to resist and I really enjoyed splashing around in the cool surf. After taking part, I finally understand and respect the benefit of the restrictions in this way of life. A women's body is under so much scrutiny in the west, and in Bangladesh , it felt liberating to be fully clothed and not judged on my appearance. Swimming soon resulted in making friends with the local kids who performed hand stands and caught live star fish for me. We were given a tour and a driver all afternoon curtesy of or fabulous host family (thanks again!!). We visited many sites of interest including the beach view point, a natural mineral waterfall, an atmospheric buddhist temple and a traditional burmese market. Wow. I would recommend going on holiday here!!
