Today I went ahead and added a stop. I had originally planned two nights at Carlsbad, but we did what I wanted at Carlsbad Caverns National Park (see prior days entry,) so now it was time to move to our next stop.

We started heading out of Carlsbad (North) and I found the sign for a park – Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park. So I turned onto the small road up a good hill to the top where the park is located. We walked the grounds and looked at the animals and the plant life. The park has a good view of Carlsbad.

The next stop was Roswell – to be more precise – International UFO Museum Research Center. This part of the country is flat so it was a nice drive from Carlsbad to Roswell. Once we arrived into town, I kept a very watchful eye on the computer (Street Atlas) to find where the museum is located. As we were approaching, I noticed that a street fair was occurring in front of the museum (meaning the street is closed). Now it was time to find a parking spot for the RV and trailer. I was in luck and was able to find one fairly close (two blocks away).

We went into the museum and donated some money – No set fee to enter the museum. The place had a lot of people looking at all the information. After viewing the information of course you need to head on into the gift shop to buy some trinkets.

After the Museum it was time for lunch so we stopped at a Dairy Queen – The place really didn’t have parking for the RV, but I was able to park and not block anything or anybody.

After lunch, we started to leave the flat plains and head into the mountains; we passed some Indian casinos before turning onto state route 244. The road had signs about loose gravel and I started to get worried again about flying rocks (see day 15). But it turned out that it was fine – no flying rocks. We finally make it trough the trees to a very pretty town called Cloudcroft. We stopped for gas and found out my next planned stopped would be closed by the time we get there. We took the two trusty books (Woodalls and TrailerLife) out trying to find a campground. But I remembered a sign at the east end of town pointing to a possible campground. So off we go, following the signs, we found the place. I pulled up the steep hill and parked the RV (hoping that the brakes would hold – STEEP!) Following the sign on the door, I called and found out they had one spot left and I might fit. I pulled the RV forward and then was able to back the RV and trailer into the spot. I now wish I got a picture to show how close the trailer was to the top of the log wall and how close the front of the RV (with the slideout out) was to the trees.

After setting up camp, mom and I noticed a wet line on the ground. After looking I was able to see that it was transmission fluid from the RV. Looking and putting a bowl under the transmission showed no more dripped out during the night. I chalked it up to that the transmission was hot and under a lot of stress and might be a tad to full. The fluids most likely came from the vent tube at the top of the transmission.

It was early enough and we needed to get dinner – so we walked down the road back towards town. Once we got to the highway, we noticed that there was a restaurant just down the road to the east so we walked to it. Big Daddy’s Diners was a very good place to eat!!!! After talking with the owners we made a decision to come back for breakfast – they have enough parking across the highway for the motorhome.
