We hit civilisation. I think most people on the south island must live near Christchurch or Nelson. I haven’t seen hardly any houses anywhere else we have been. Christchurch isn’t a patch on Nelson though, its not really my cup of tea. But I think part of this is I have been spoiled by places such as Wanaka and Te Anau. Its also a big shock returning to a “city” again.
Things I really notice are the graffiti, the unkempt nature of the place, and the way bungalows are practically in the city centre. We visit a couple of shopping malls and come away disappointed with the number/type of shops, and the food mall facilities. In this regard our experience in Perth was much better.
I’m being harsh on Christchurch, it wasn’t so bad, just a city I suppose. We did visit 3 caravan parks before we decided to stay at one aswell though. And there were security gates up in the caravan park we finally stayed at, something we had not seen before.
