A busy busy day. We head to Meteor Crater first, its only down the road from the RV park. Its basically a big hole in the ground, is smaller than I expected (had read it was a mile wide, it turns out be less). Is still impressive though, but only so many ways you can view a hole. Matthew is well behaved (again), and gets a piggy back upto the view point from me.
28 dollars lighter we set off up the I-40 to the next destination. This is the Petrified Forest. In short petrified trees are trees which have turned to a type of stone (silica) quite a while ago ( a few million years or something, think its debated as to how long).
We see much of the forest up for sale as we enter the park, in fact we see more forest for sale outside than we see in the park! This turns out to be because of 2 reasons. The first is that a lot of the land is private, so the owners are cashing in. And secondly it seems the tourists are all nicking it out of the park.
So not many logs about, but we do see some remarkable scenery, its a great park to visit, I highly recommend it. The kids were both asleep the whole time through aswell, which made it doubly enjoyable! For a while it felt like before we had the kids when me and Steve came over to the states and went sightseeing.
I think we are all a bit happier as feeling better after illness, and also its nice to see something new. Me and Steve have travelled to the states a few times, so LA, San Diego, Grand Canyon is all a bit old hat to us.
We then hit the "Painted Desert" which is a vast area across Arizona, but part of it is within the Petrified Forest park. It too is a spectacular sight, not something I have seen before. Arizona has a lot of good places to visit, its just a shame it is so hot. I think you could spend 2 weeks just travelling round Arizona if you planned it right.
We leave after feeding the kids up and letting Matthew have a play around in the RV. They have both slept a lot today, but I think this is a good thing as they are both a bit run-down.
We head up to Canyon De Chelley which is en-route to Monument Valley. We get our 2nd free camping in a National Park RV campsite. Its a lovely site too, with lots of secluded parking, and quite at one with nature (well as best you can do with 7 ton RVs hanging around!).
Steve cooks (well makes) dinner (salad) for the first time this holiday! Hurrah! I think it was the 3 hour lecture I gave him earlier that did it.
