Started the day in Phuket, Swam, and then took a few pics before departing for airport at 10:30am for 12:55 flight. Two hops today: one to Bangkok on Thai Airways, and then one from Bangkok to Chiang Mai courtesy of 1-2-Go Airways.
Two hitches on the trip to Chiang Mai which tended to cancel each other out: 1. Thai Airways would not check our baggage thru to CM since a second carrrier was involved. This was unexpected as we had asked this question specifically of our travel agent, who answered "of course it would be no problem". So we knew then that we would have to pick up our bags in Bangkok, return to the 1-2-Go desk in departures to check in for the second leg, and then make a mad dash for the gate. All this in 45 minutes. I wasn't hopeful.
2. The flight to CM was over an hour delayed so we had TWO hours to do the above so "no worries". We arrived in CM around 5:30pm.
We were met by yet a new tour guide whose name we pronounce as "Sigh", and I have no clue as to the driver's name. The hotel was 20 minutes from the airport and is five star in contrast to the last three hotels we have stayed in. Really nice, and a nice change.
Off to dinner at 7pm, and then off to go shopping! I do believe you can shop round the clock in this country! I can't begin to describe the market well, just imagine the largest flea market you have ever seen, gussy it up a bit, play some Christmas carols in the background, and imagine wall to wall people of all persuasions. This is the "street market". By 11:30 we were marketed out. As the driver had been dismissed earlier, we all got into the bed of a pickup trick that was covered and had bench seats, and had an interesting ride back to the hotel.
