The moment I set foot on the Costa Maya peir, I wanted to sing, dance, skip, and plain rejoice. The weather was perfect, the water was crystal blue, and most importantly...I was off the CRUISE SHIP! Since I have been on numerous sailboat trips in the past, I thought living on a ship bigger than King Kong would be a breeze...not so. Something about not having a window in my room made me feel like I was trapped in a luxurious prison more than anything else. I was more than happy to be on land....
Our first destination was a catamaran and snorkel trip to Chincorro (the world’s second largest coral reef). Being the clever person that I am, I had forgotten my swimming suit in Miami, and was demeaned into holding my breath and squeezing inside a too small children sized bikini we purchased on the ship (the ships suit selection was extremely limited). It was rather embarrassing, but I think it amused Derek, and I defiantly learned my lesson!
The reef was amazing, and I found the experience very relaxing since I took my time watching the fish and the water was very buoyant. There were several huge conch shells like what you see in movies, sponge coral, fan coral, brain coral...every type you can imagine. The fish were a little shy and would dart off if you got within touching distance of them, but would get pretty close if you weren’t moving too much.
