St. Lucia is lush. Very green mountains, very dramatic. I definitely need to come back here to see the rest of the island - apparently we missed not only touring the mountains and botanical gardens, but a drive-in volcano! We heard the roads are very twisty and motion-sickness inspiring, and we wanted to relax, so we opted to have a beach day instead.
We easily got a taxi after getting off the ship. We went to Reduit Beach, to the north of Castries. We were let off at Spinnakers restaurant on the beach. Everything was very organized. Our taxi driver gave us his number, so we could call him when we were ready to go, and introduced us to the man that apparently stands there with his cell phone, just to let tourists like us get in contact with our taxi drivers. That man in turn introduced us to the man renting out beach chairs. We got 3 beach chairs and an umbrella, none too soon. Shortly after we got there the lovely beach got packed with other tourists - we were lucky we had decided to go early.
The beach was beautiful, lined with restaurants and hotels. It would be a very nice area to stay. I appreciated having our umbrella so I could get in the shade when the sun felt too strong. I ran in to Spinnakers to get myself a juice and use their bathroom. For the lazier, there were women walking around with coolers of cold drinks, ready for purchase. The surf was strong but it is possible to play in the water - just be really careful not to get swept away!
When we had enough of that we returned to Castries for some shopping. There was a huge craft market that was very stuffy, and some upscale air-conditioned malls on the other side of the port, but we liked the shopping directly in front of our ship! T-shirts, little souvenir paintings, and ice-cold lemonade made me a happy woman.
