It was a super long drive to Cape Town from Madikwe (17 hours) so we spent the night in Kimberly, home of the worlds biggest hole (dug by hand). Sorry to say we missed that site but we had a desert to drive through. We arrived in Cape Town and it really took us awhile to find somewhere to stay because South Africans like to start celebrating Christmas Dec 1st. We found a place for the first few nights and began our explorations of Cape Town.
We stayed in this really cute neighborhood and it was really strange to be back among the urbanites! It is a completely developed American-esq city. We really spent our time here casually enjoying the city. We did things like shop at a weekend market, catch a movie..two actually, saw a play, ate Italian food, went to the Botanical gardens for a pop concert (Watershed was the name of the band we saw) um...they were pretty bad but the setting was beautiful and it was like going to Ravinia or the Hatch Shell. We went to a laundry mat which was very exciting. We drove up the mountain for a view of the area and saw Robbins Island (where Nelson Mandella was held) we tried to get tickets to actually go to the island but they were sold out for a whole week! We went to the aquarium too. We ate dinner amongst the gays of Cape Town at a cute veggie burger joint. All in all Cape Town is a beautiful city to spend some time.
Suggestions: DO NOT get your hair dyed at "SCAR" because they will take 4 hours, you will cry and then walk out, not having paid because they f'd up your hair so bad.
Also, don't stay at Afrique du sur hostel...you will get bed bugs like we did! OUCH!!!
Go see the movies "The Holiday" and especially "Little Miss Sunshine" and most importantly "Dhoom 2" a Bollywood flick we actually saw in Johanesburg. Its our favorite movie of all time now!
