This is an award winning resort on Aboriginal land about 4 hours north of Broome on largely unsealed roads which deters the caravans. There are on-site eco tents, beach huts and camp sites (our choice). It’s very scenic, small and friendly.
The highlight for us was going “mud crabbing” with Vincent, the Aboriginal guide. Off we went down private 4WD tracks to the mangroves at low tide. Armed with steel rods with a hook at the end we set off on foot. One can’t help but think about this being crocodile habitat … The mud kept pulling M’s loose fitting rock pool shoes off. A was in the thick of it and loving it. We left the under sized and females ones and bagged about 8 good crabs, five of which we took home to boil up for dinner. In the end we had crab for dinner, crab for the lunch the next day, and crab on toast the next for breaky.
Aside from the migrating Humpback Whale we saw off the beach, sunsets, and a great snorkel that A and I did, another highlight was getting to use the camp oven for the first time. We perfected damper (see recipe below) and even made a hot pot complete with pastry crust on top.
PJ’s Damper – 2 cups self raising flour, 50ml milk, ¾ cup water, dash salt – mix in bowl, no handling, flour camp oven, donut hole in middle, cook on moderate camp fire coals (cover top & bottom of camp oven) for 20 minutes, serve with butter, jam or honey. Delicious !!!!
