Sorry ladies (and some gents) - it´s not what you think.
The men of Ecuador have something to say, it´s a statment they can make without saying a word. They´re hot and they´re sick of being that way. All the women can dress however scantily they wish, but the men - they must wear long pants and button down shirts and they´re staging a massive country-wide protest. They are lifting their shirts above their cerveza bellies in protest and they´re going to walk around like that everywhere - bare middrifts out for the world to see.
Honestly, I wish that I had not been foiled again by the camera obstacles I´ve encountered (today it would have worked, but I didn´t charge the camera it ran out of power before I could download the photos), as I could show you just what I mean. It´s funny - I´ve seen this everywhere... on the bus ride from Guayaquil and all around the coast.
On this topic, and since some of you have asked, I have to say that I haven´t found the Ecuadorian men to be that attractive, but I´ve only been here for a week so there is still a lot of time to look. :)
So, today I took the bus to San Vicente and took a short ferry ride over to Bahia de Caraquez, the little town across the bay (incidentally, it´s one of the towns that kept a stronghold defense against both the Incas and the Spaniards when they were both trying to and finally suceeded in conquering Ecuador). It´s a bigger town than Canoa and has nicer phone, internet and shopping facilities... plus it´s just a little change in scenery. While Ecuadorian men haven´t been terribly attractive, one thing I have noticed is that they are all very eager to help *everyone. On the bus, we came upon a man with a broken down car. For 10 minutes, four people got off the bus to push the car up a hill.... can you imagine an MTA bus in this scenario?
Since it´s the weekend, I don´t have Spanish class today or tomorrow which is very nice. Spanish classes are four hours a day - two hours in the morning for grammar and two hours in the afternoon for exercises and conversation. I´m getting better at least, and whatever Spanish proficiency I once had is slowly slowly slowly seeping back into my consciousness.
Anyway, all is going well so this is all for now! xoxo
