After 3 days of sailing from Barcelona, we arrived in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. It was hard to believe that we were so near to Morocco, one of the places I would like to visit in the future.
As well as Malta, this is one of the places where African immigrants arrive by chance when their boats broke down on their way to Europe. Also, Canary Islands have a connection to Japan since it has a memorial stone of Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution. Amending 'war-renoucing Article 9' has been high on Japan's political agenda these days.
I worked for a sightseeing tour which visited all sightseeing spots round the island of Gran Canaria. As I heard that Canary Islands are one of the biggest holiday destinations for Europeans, the place looked very tropical and touristy. It looked same as Hawaii, where a great number of Japanese go on a holiday.
The local guide who I was working with was extremely nice. I could easily see that she really enjoyed her job. She explained about almost everything we could see -- flowers on the road, vegetables which grew in the greenhouse, tourism in Gran Canaria, economy, history etc. They were rich in details but it was not terribly difficult to interpret.
We had a pleasant lunch at the restaurant on the hill. We got to see the beautiful nature of the island, and had a live music play for us. Food was absolutely gorgeous. Very enjoyable. I almost forgot that I was working!
Back in the bus, the guide saw participants satisfied with food and looked a bit sleepy, she put a lovely music for them to enjoy instead of giving more information about the island. One lady sat behind me even hummed a tune, she looked very in a good mood and so did her husband. They looked so cute together :) Our guide definately knew how to entertain her guests!
We continued our sightseeing tour until we actually drove round the island and came back to the port. I saw some Japanese restaurant on our way back to the port. I heard that Gran Canaria used to be the place where a lot of Japanese tuna fishing boats were around.
Back to the port, myself and Saori headed to town to have a dinner. After wondering around the mall near the port, we decided to go for Chinese. Don't ask me why we picked Chinese dishes in Gran Canaria though! It was a buffet style restaurant so we could eat as much as we wanted (for 10 euros). I actually ate too much...
Next port will be Cuba - My first time in Latin America!
