How can I describe this place, hmmm...European village with cool mountain air and hot Indian food...India meets Switzerland, maybe? Cameron Highlands wins the award so far as the best place to do nothing. 3 nights in a converted army barracks near the tea plantations of this rural Malaysian town was just what we needed to chill from all the busyness of being on the road.
We spent most of the first day just talking with other travelers over tea, then of course beer. Rumors of a cheap local golf course got us off our butts around 4pm and we set off for what must have been one of the most ridiculous performances in the history of the sport. I have to say, the best thing about golfing in Malaysia is that the local kids run around the course hunting for all the balls you lose in the river and the woods, and then they try to sell them back to you afterwards. These kids must've been happy to see us 'cause, after losing 5 balls on the first hole we had a small army following us for the rest of the day. By the 9th hole we'd lost 18 balls between the two of us and decided to call it quits.
Day two, I hopped on the public bus with an English girl named Mim, to set out for a hike in the foothills and tea plantations. We had an awesome and relaxing hike and even saw a few snakes, afterwards we got talking over tea about trekking deep into the jungles of Taman Negara National Park...the next day, we were on a bus there. Meanwhile, Jon was heading up to the islands near the Thai border, so we planned to meet up a couple weeks later.
