Hi there!
I hope the everyone is doing well. We're now in the second week of school and it's starting to pick up a little. I'm still not totally impressed with my classes here, but there's still almost 4 months for things to improve. Arabic is probably the only one that I have that's really a challenge. I think we're half way through the alphabet right now and I'm already lost and overwhelmed. Our teacher is excellent though and really encouraging. Even when we butcher the words (which is always), she's always like, "good for trying." Unfortunately for us, she's pregnant so who knows how much longer she's going to be teaching us for. I guess I can always keep my fingers crossed that the women's movement in Egypt hasn't advanced to the point of maternity leaves, but I think that's wishful thinking.
Rowing is still going alright. Our coach has forgiven us for the little mishap last time. I think he's starting to freak out though because we have our first race at the end of March, and we still have tons to learn. We just moved from the "baby" boat to the "big kid" boat last practice. I still don't think that he thought we were ready for it, but the seats weren't working very well in "baby" boat so we didn't really have a choice. It's funny because even though I hated the "baby" boat, there was something comforting about being in a boat where the capsizing potential was almost nil. Our new boat, while nicer in appearance, definitely rocks a lot more. We were all kind of nervous because no one wants to end up in the Nile. That river is disgusting!! It's nice in the morning to be rowing along and looking at the scenery of Cairo... and then a pile of trash goes floating by and shatters the moment. Anyways, we were all cracking jokes about falling in and then future children of ours being born with third arms while we stood around on the dock waiting to get in. At least we don't have to row in the dreaded "Flippy" or "Tipsy" yet... although I think we race in those, so I guess it's a matter of time.
I think we are starting to improve some though. Although at the beginning of today's practice, I couldn't figure out why we weren't moving before clueing in that Hye Won was rowing the wrong way, so maybe not. I'm sorry for the constant rowing tales, but I haven't really done much in the past week except for rowing and school, and school's boring so that only leaves rowing. Hopefully, my life will become more interesting soon. I hope everyone's doing well. I've included some more random photos from the Alexandria trip.
Talk to you later,
Katie
