After another exciting stop over in Bahrain, we arrived in Cairo. Unfortunately, we can't say the same for Carries bag. It has been almost a week and still no trace of it...grr...
maybe, if you all believe hard enough that Carrie's bag will arrive and clap your hands really loudly, then it will appear by the time we make our way back to Cairo....ok, start clapping.
Because of this lost bag nonsense, we did a little shopping in Cairo. Turns out you can get Diesel jeans for 30 USD there...not bad. The most tragic part of it all is that our adapters were in her bag and now I can't blow dry my hair. Grrr.
Back to Cairo. Its a huge city and we didn't see much of it our first stop here because the next morning we headed right out to camp in the sahara desert for two nights. When we got back to Cairo from the desert we stayed just one night and then headed by train to Aswan.
We did, however, find time to get taken to a perfume shop. Ugh. We spent many hours and after much negotiation ended up spending way too much on lots of fancy egyptian oils. Don't worry, they make great gifts. Carrie had to fight off the advances of an overzealously in love Egyptian man. I almost kicked him in the head. I drew the line when he tried to kiss her on the cheek while we took a picture with him ...of course at his request.
It was in Cairo that we learned that Eid, the Muslim holiday, will be taking place just after Christmas and it culminates in a mass slaughtering of animals in the streets on Dec. 30th. Yes, EVERYONE buys a lamb, chicken, goat, whatever and keeps them fed and happy until Dec 30th when they bring them out to the street and slit their little helpless necks and bleeds them to death in the street. As though that is not exciting enough, they all wear white and then decorate themselves in the blood. WOW, we will be staying far away from the outside on Dec. 30th. Apparently, it smells really bad too...as one may imagine. Death smells bad.
We'll have more on Cairo when we head back there from the Nile Valley.
