Welcome to Australia!!

Wednesday, February 14/15th 2007 (Cairns to Elliot Beach, Australia)

Touch down Cairns, Australia 12:30pm!! We arrived safely, as well did our entire luggage. The humidity is almost unbearable! A short cab to pick up our NEW home for the next 42 days, hopefully the air is working well in our new home. (Maui RV- not to impressed with the Maui motor home compared to the Affordable version in NZ! No where near the storage both inside & out. Good thing we brought the tent for the boys, looks like we are going to have to use the top bunk as well as the bathroom/shower for storage…this may present a challenge or two after a few weeks…). After a brief altercation with respect to RV insurance, we have loaded up our entire luggage & are heading north towards Port Douglas. First stop groceries, which has presented it own challenges. We ended up stopping at a IGA in Smithville, where we have been informed (after we paid), that most IGA’s are similar to our 7 elevens (very expensive), and the Woolworths & Coles that we past are not department or book stores but major grocery outlets, who would of known!…Opppss will not make that mistake again! We have decided to spend our first night in Australia parked 2meters from the oceans edge right on the beach of the “Elliot Beach Leisure Park”. Fantastic spot, minus the humidity, bugs, lizards & snakes. Oh ya and the crocks, it seems that with all the rain lately a few 3-4 meter crocks have been spotted swimming out front of the resort as a result of being washed down from the hills via the swelled up mountain streams. Besides all that, looks like we own the place! One of our walks down the beach has once again educated us to our beautiful, but deadly surroundings. The beaches here are outstanding in both their size, sand and color of water. All of which make them extremely inviting on these unbearable humid days…except for one little detail, you CAN’T swim in the water because the northern beaches this time of the year are infested with deadly “box jellyfish”! Time to pack up and head north to where we can hopefully enjoy the ocean via the GBR (Great Barrier Reef).
