21.3.06 – 27.3.06
Picked up our brand new luxury camper van (a $1 p/day relocation bargain with money towards fuel!!!), and started our east coast road trip from Sydney to Cairns.
Our first stop was Newcastle for a quick swim in the ocean baths, before arriving at Port Macquerie. We visited a Koala reserve the following morning. We fed wallabies and kangaroos who let us stroke them, and Jess also had a cuddle of a Koala. For some reason the wallabies reminded us of Charlie, but then most animals on the trip have!
Next stop was Byron bay where we checked out the surfing and saw some bottle nose dolphins off the coast. We then had a couple of nights at Arlie Beach at the Whitsunday Islands, which were really beautiful. We went on a one day cruise round the islands, which included snorkelling on the great barrier reef. The coral and the fish werereally colourfull, it was very cool swimming amongst them. Jess also spotted two turtles and a swordfish!! We also had a guided tour on a glass bottomed boat and underwater observatory We did a bit of sunbathing on the famous whitehaven beach on Whitsunday Island itself...pure white sand and turquoise waters, before a beer at the end of the day on daydream island.
We headed further north to Townsville next where we met up with our mate Tom, who is having an extended holiday over here. Tom took us out to Big Crystal Creek in paluma national park. We enjoyed a few beers and a swim in the creek before crashing out for the night. We reached Cairns the following morning, after passing through the area that cyclone larry hit, which looked pretty devastated.
We dropped off the van and headed to the supermarket for essentials...beer and barby food!! We found a nice campsite to pitch the tents and had a barby feast with a few tinnies!
