We arrived in Broome in a bit of a state having spent the previous five days camping in the bush around Karijini National Park. On the final night of the trip we camped near Port Hedland and got absolutely massacred by sandflies and mosquitoes. We were therefore over the moon to find that the place we were staying, the Broome Motel, was clean and comfortable.
Our first impressions of the town were mixed. There were quite a few alcoholic aboriginals in town which was a little bit unsettling. They weren't threatening in any way but it was really sad to see them in that state. After a quick meal in town on the first evening we headed over to the Divers Tavern in Cable Beach where we met the rest of our Karijini tour group for farewell drinks.
The following morning we found a lovely spot for breakfast and then had a decent look around town. On the best things that we did in Broome was to go to the open air cinema, where we saw a movie called Pans Labarinth. You can enjoy the film sitting in a deckchair underneath the stars. Then, about half way through the film a plane went directly overhead, drowning out the film (which thankfully was subtitled). Definitely a unique experience!
The other major asset that the town has is the world renowned Cable Beach, about 4kms to the west of the centre. The beach is great and the sunsets here are amazing. The sky went a deep orange colour which then faded into pink. We saw the camels taking tourists along the beach at sunset and took some lovely photographs.
After two days of rest and recuperation we were ready for the second of our camping trips. During this trip through the Kimberley we really will be miles from anywhere.
