We managed to get a cheap Mega Bus ticket to Brighton, and arrived after work at 10:30pm. Robbie had already organised a hostel at the Walkabout for us but we got there and the manager was out so we spent an interesting two hours in the foyer waiting only to be told NO, there aren't any rooms! So 12:30am and we were pretty pissed to be wandering around with our packs, we found the nearest place, and paid two nights including breakfast. Only one problem this place was gross. Our first room's basin was not attached at all and when I turned the tap on water started pouring out from everywhere, hence we were moved. We managed to fend off bed bugs by using our own sleeping bags and lots of dimp. Needless to say when we went to the dinning room for breakfast which had been set since 26th May 1974 with the original dust and water marks on the crockery since 30th May 1974 we left to find food else where!
Brighton however is amazing, it is very Kitsch, a 1940's-50's sea side town. The pier is amazing and an absolute photogenic structure, especially the burnt out old one. At first it was strange sitting on a pebbled beach but then it was well, uncomfortable! The pebbles are rather cool though.
Luckily for us a food festival was taking place so there was no shortage of delicious things to try.
'The lanes' shopping area is brilliant and great value. Most things are original and not the mainstream stuff which is a really nice change! We spent quite literally hours lost amongst them just looking at things.
We went to King George IV Royal Pavilion. It is based on an oriental theme. It is ornately designed, with bright colours and kooky accessories. The palace is owned by the town now so it has been restored to it's original state, and it means you are allowed everywhere, including commode rooms and the bedrooms they used to sleep in. The kitchens for some reason were a highlight! They had the original serving platters in gold and all the copper pots and pans of every imaginable size as well as a giant 'spit' device over a huge open fire. It was an automatic one which tok over the job of a 'Spit Boy', I hope he was able to find work as something else!
We had Gourmet Burger Kitchen for dinner aka Burger Wisconsin and then headed for the pier for some rides and arcade games. We went on the Hurricane which was run by a Kiwi as we were the only ones on it he gave us a longer more exciting ride to the beat of his mates music, it was such a wee thrill. We played lots of spaceys and soaked up the holiday atmosphere before heading to our wee 'Grotto'
The next day, our final day we went to the Art gallery which was the kookiest thing of all and rather boring. SO we left to have a pic-nic only to be treated to some heavy couple petting in the park as well as a demo of extreme hoola hooping, what a treat! We sifted off down to the Aquarium one of the oldest around, it was quaint, pricey and a tad boring for adults.
We had fish and chips on the beach and played around until it was time to board our bus and head back to London. It was incredibly relaxing and entertaining. we had a lovely time and can't wait to go back!
