One of my favorite fly fishing spots is the Davidson River in North Carolina. In my book it's more of a creek compared to Western Rivers, comparable to Oak Creek on its section around Cathedral Rock.
The river in the Pisgah Forest near Brevard is Catch and Release fly only water, and is hatchery supported. This equals a great fisher and opportunity to catch fish that rival in size to Western Rivers.
At the time I fished on Thanksgiving weekend it was the coldest day of the year. Being a Floridian I usually think I can go fishing any day in winter, and for the first time had the entire river to myself. I started about daylight, and on my first or second cast caught my second biggest trout 20" Rainbow, and there are bigger 'Bowsand Browns on the river. I wil have to admit it took me a while to figure out why my line and reel were not working properly, but it was 15 degrees and ice was an issue.
My family was absolutely convinced I was insane for fishing, but that close to my favorite fishing hole...I'm going, besides a cute NC Girl called it dedication. The balance between sane and insanity is a thin line sometimes.
For those who do fly fish, A 4 Weight rod is about right, and will reduce the amount of explitives and flies consumed by tree limbs on the opposite bank. I usually fish flies size 18 -22 on a 6x or 7x tippet, due to the drought the waters are very shallow and clear, these fish see a lot of flies so even the hatchery fish get smart. You lose some fish, but in the balance you'll catch more and bigger on the light tippet. Davidson River Outfitters supply local knowledge right at the entrance to the Pisgah forest in Brevard. The also offer guide services, even though I haven't used them. I do recommend Kent with Biltmore Fly Fishing in Asheville, especially if you are new to the sport.
