We eventually arrived in Bonito some 6 hours later, around 4pm. We all decided we fancied a few drinks that evening, so popped over the road to our local 'supermarket' to pick up some bottles of grog. I opted for some Cachaca (the sugar cane rum used as a base for Caipirinhas) - it's great with coke & lime, & costs less than £2 a bottle! A couple of hours later I went into town to meet Levy for a few beers. By the time we got back to the hostel the others were well sozzled & all kinds of things were going on!
The following day was Nel's birthday, so we gave her some pressies (bracelet, rubber ring & cuddly koala - as you do!) & went on a couple of mini excursions. Our first trip was to a cave inside of which there's a bright blue lake. Before venturing down into the cave, Mon & I had to swap our flip-flops for some rather attractive bowling shoes (which they tried to make us pay for, cheeky buggars). The lake was a beautiful colour, but in the end we had to run away from our guide because he was going on & on & on & on (something to do with worms in the water being the cause of the colouring, I think!), & we wanted to get back to Bonito ready to go on our next excursion i.e. an afternoon beside the river (the municipal 'baths'!) - where the boys got to play footie & volleyball etc., whilst us girlies did a spot of sunbathing, reading & splashing about in the water (hence Nel's rubber ring).
Then it was time for Nel's 'proper' birthday celebrations. We started off by having cake & cocktails - the cake having been cooked especially by the hostel staff, bless them. Once we'd had enough of sitting around the hostel drinking we headed into town to a local bar, along with a couple of the local guides & their friends. I tried a caipirinha made from beer, which sounded disgusting but actually tasted rather nice! There was much dancing & jollity (& Nel managed to split her trousers whilst strutting her stuff on the dancefloor!). At some point in the evening we were also joined by a bunch of Israeli guys who were staying in Bonito for a couple of days before heading into the Pantanal Wetlands. How jealous was I?! Oh, to be able to go back...
The following day was fairly lazy. Spent the morning chilling in bed & rehydrating!! Then pottered into town to do a few 'chores' before heading out to the YHA hostel to take advantage of their swimming pool & hammocks :o) Don't think you're normally allowed to do this but I was sneaked in! All soon enough it was time to get packed up & leave Bonito & Mato Grosso :o(((((
