We quickly settled into the routine of life on board our transcontinental train. If you are travelling Silver & Blue class there is sparkling wine and canapes each time you leave a city, and there are three sittings for lunch and dinner in the dining car, which are announced by a steward walking up and down the corridors. Only between the carriages do we get the full taste of the wintry landscape that we see through the windows - the frozen passageways have snowdrifts in the corners. The carriages themselves are cosy and warm - the place where friendships are formed through the shared experiences; we all scurry to the windows like children when our driver points out the first glimpse of the Rockies, or a wolf by the side of the tracks. When I am dropped off at my destination and see the train disappearing into the whiteness of the landscape ahead of it I feel my home is leaving me behind.
