The day began with our drive out of avila beach.. a bit foggy and dreary! Nontheless, we continued on to take a quick view of the Hearst castle, but decided to make our way up the coast rather than take the 3 hour tour. We came upon San Simeon, which was home to hundreds of beached seals that were waiting to mate! That's right, a bunch of young elephant seals just sprawled out on the beach and basking in the sun waiting for the ladies. What a sight. There were a few seals sparring in the water ( young ones in "training" as we came to find out) , but most looked as though they were just having a lazy sunday comatose on the beach. Apparently three months out of the year these seals call San Simeon there home as they post up on the beach and fast for this amount of time, saving energy for the females. It was rather fascinating to see wild animals in their natural habitat rather in confinement at a zoo. Amazing!
BIG SUR...WOW! If you ever have to drive anywhere...let the coast of california be your place. Seriously, the drive is worth every minute. As you turn corners you are in for yet another gorgeous sight to behold. Cliffs that meet the ocean while you are above the clouds looking down is extremely magical. Stopping off at various viewpoints to take photos was a nec essity of the day. Napenthe is the gem of Big Sur. Nestled between Julia Pfieffer Burns park and Big Sur Park, Napenthe ( a lovely cafe on top of a mountain overlooking the ocean!) is the perfect place to grab a coffee, glass of wine or nice lunch while experiencing these breathtaking views.
After a delicous lunch, we headed off for a brief hike in Big Sur state park. Lined with Redwoods and lush greenery, we came upon a waterfall and fresh mountain air!! Next off as we drove into the sunset...Carmel here we come!!!
Needless to say, the drive has been one of the best parts. Not only for the view, but also because Johnny G is the coolest rapper alive. He can really carry a tune, let me tell you!
...this portion brought to you by Jaclyn :)
