We stayed at the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort & Spa for two nights in March during a trip to visit family in the area. We have visited the area numerous times before (and stayed in several other hotels), but had never stayed at this hotel. The Hyatt is neither in Albuquerque nor Santa Fe, rather it’s off I-25 just north of Albuquerque. It sounds like an odd location, but when you get to the property (down a small road several miles from the main intersection), you understand why it’s located where it is: there are beautiful mountain and mesa views for miles.

The hotel designers succeeded in creating a building that matches the landscape and that blends into the natural surroundings. When you’re on the property, the usual hotel-in-Albuquerque vista of a shopping center or other suburban sprawl is nowhere in sight.

The location makes this more of a destination property than a hotel to use for travelers who intend to spend most of their time in Albuquerque or Santa Fe. And it is a nice destination: the hotel features several restaurants, a bar, a spa, several outdoor pools, walking trails, horse stables and a golf course. Because we were visiting family, we didn’t have time to use all of the facilities. We were disappointed to miss out on the spa as it looked particularly inviting.

Our room was bright and cheery, with a sliding door that opened onto a small balcony. The bedroom had a flat screen television, easy chair and writing desk. The bathroom was larger than the usual chain hotel bathroom and featured pleasant eucalytpus-scented bath amenities from Hyatt’s in-house Portico brand.

The hotel is large, a fact you don’t realize from the outside because of its discreet design, but which becomes obvious on the (sometimes long) walk to your room. We didn’t mind this however, because we realized that the hotel must be large enough to include the facilities expected at a resort hotel.

Although in general we found the service to be above average, we did have an unpleasant experience with a noisy neighbor late one night that took multiple calls and a walk to the front desk (at 12:30 am) to resolve. This unfortunate misstep marred an otherwise enjoyable stay (and the staff was helpful later with things like printing our boarding passes).

Overall, this is a nice hotel with many benefits and amenities. We’re not sure it’s worth the high (for the area) prices that it charges, but we do recommend it as a solid, dependable choice for visitors to the area.
