Wow! We can't believe how HUGE this city is! We arrived just in time for dinner and promptly chose a local (ie. non-touristy) restaurant. The room went silent and ALL eyes focused on us. We sat down to a HUGE dinner of Spicy Tofu, Egg-Drop soup, Fish, Rice and two beers all for the low, low price of $7.00! The food was delicious but the atmosphere was severely lacking. In China, it's OK to spit (yes, SPIT) on the floor of certain restaurants. Also, any napkins, fish bones or inedible bits get tossed onto the floor/table. It was quite disgusting.
Afterwards we took a quick walk to Tiananmen Square. It's a massive concrete square with soldiers patrolling all around. It was amazing to actually be there and see the giant painting of Mao Zedong. What a handsome fellow! That evening, we witnessed a beautiful orange-red sunset. I guess there's at least ONE good thing about all the air pollution.
