I would say stay in an apartment if you are visiting for any more than three nights. We had a one bedroom apartment in a great pedestrianized area of Barcelona, right in the middle of the action. We got to use extras like a full kitchen and cd player, things you wouldn't find in the average hotel, for the same price as a fairly inexpensive hotel.
