Khao San Road is awesome! I have heard it described as "almost a cariacature of a backpacker's haven" and how true, but in a most brilliant way.  The street is bustling, funky music blasting out everywhere, hoards of fellow backpackers, lots of cool bars. And sooo many cool things to buy cheap - dresses, jewels, flip flops, t shirts - it is taking some serious self control not to splurge too much! Glad not to be staying on this road mind, wouldn't get much sleep. Whiled away a few hours on the first night eating chicken and cashew nut stir fry and sipping Chang beer and watching all the Khoa San action.

Day 2 in te city we hailed a tuk-tuk (a crazy, 3 wheeled invention so called because of the constant loud noise it makes. Tuk tuk drivers are apparently immune to road signs/ lights and feel most comfortable when driving on the wrong side of the road, weaving between the oncoming traffic!!), took us to 3 different temples housing the reclining buddha, sitting buddha and another one I can't remember maybe the breakdancing buddha - each was about 30foot high and painted gold. The temples are awesome, no expense is spared in adorning them with mosaics, jewels and murals. Later in the day though we were in for a real treat in visiting the Grand Palace and most hailed temple of all, Wat Phra Kao - amazingly ornate and shiny. In the evening, we had a welcome dip in the pool at the Royal Hotel then headed back to Khao San for a tasty Thai green curry. I got my hair braided and now look like a proper hippy backpacker :-)

Have pre-booked a trip to Chiang Mai up in Northern Thailand next - no tickets, all we were told was that a man will appear at our hotel at 5 on a motorbike, put us in a cab and take us to the bus station to buy our tickets - sounds dubious so I hope we get there okay?......
