First impressions were strange. Will always remember the Airport/Golf course. Can't imagine standing over a pressure putt with a Jumbo jet landing beside me! When we finally got off the plane we were trying not to get ripped off and get a taxi to our hotel. City was crazy, people, cars, tuk-tuks and lights everywhere.
When we pulled up to the hotel it was amazing. Lobby was huge and marble. When we got to the desk they gave us two Ice teas, which I thought were lovely, but Clare wasn't impressed. I kept bowing back to the ladie behind the desk when she bowed to me, much to the amusment of Clare. Think I was a bit high on Jet fuel or something! Our room in the hotel was amazing, just what I expected. That night we took it easy, just going down to the pool and sauna and jacuzzi for a little while. We also had a look around the MBK centre. 7 floors of pure markets! Madness.
Next day we left the sanctuary of our hotel and took a Taxi to the Khoa San Road area, Banglamphu. Was really hot and smelly. Then we arrived in K.S. guesthouse. Absolute hole, tiny dirty room with bed-bugs and other things. Really hot. paid extra for Air Conditioning to be turned on, and it just blew hot air.
Walking towards Khoa San Road we went over to a Wat, and met a guy how informed us he liked "Loy Keane". Wanted to show us round the Wat. We were suspicious and didn't want to leave our shoes outside the door of the Wat incase they were stolen! Then he organised a Tuk-Tuk to take us to a standing Budda((One in the picture)Which only had free entry on that day apparently) and around to the TAT tourist office so we could buy train tickets. Bought train tickets from the ""TAT"" office for three times the price. Oh well... you have to get ripped off at least once there!!
Next we went onto the Khoa San Road for some shopping, food and a beer. I couldn't eat anything, was really Jet Lagged and felt sick constantly. Bought some stuff in the markets including student cards, Thai boxing shorts and T-shirts. Clare got first street vendor noodles, which she enjoyed. Then back for a sleepless night in above hole.
Next day we went to the Grand Palace after leaving our stuff in the train station. Really hot day. Bought Indiana Jones and Sombrero hats, which we managed to keep with us all the way until we left Sydney! Sweated alot in holy places and made appropriate noises at lovely architecture. 12 inch Emerald Budda a particular favourite, since we had to squint to see it on top of a two story platform. Then we went for a Thai massage. Really enjoyed it, Clare not so much. Next was a river cruise, which was fun, then on to Skytrain and up to Lumphini Park. Mad people doing Aerobics and the like. At 6pm everyone stops dead for national anthem, surreal. Felt like knackers in the fancy boutiques in sweaty cheap clothes and said hats.
Back in train station to get overnight train. Were a bit unsettled by unsavoury character shouting at us and trying to grab bags, then proceding to spit on the floor. Lovely. Finally onboard train bound for the Islands.
