Two Weeks at a School in the Inner City of Philadelphia, PA
In and around Philadelphia, United States
During the last two weeks of May, I stayed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with over 500 other students from 15 different universities. Our goal was to experience what it was like to teach in an urban setting. Upon arriving at LaSalle University (where we were staying), I was very overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of all of the hundreds of students, as well as the fact that the University was surrounded by a large brick wall and a rod-iron gate to keep us safe--I was truly out of my element. The University that I attend does not require such protective measures, for the area is very rural and does not experience a lot of crime. But, that was only the beginning of the experience that profoundly changed my life and my view of teaching, especially in inner city schools.
