Hey, I stayed in the Hosteling International Santa Monica hostel when I was in L.A. It worked really well for me. It is only 2 blocks from the beach and one block from this area called the Third Street Promenade (it is closed off to traffic and is just this great stretch of 5 streets where there are restaurants, shops, and lots of street musicians and performers). Good luck on your trip...it sounds like a great bit of fun...you must be really excited to get started.
