GRICEY'S trip to South America in August 2005
In and around Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

In March 2005, Barb a friend of mine for a long time, asked me whether I would like to go to South America with her. She had a round the World ticket" booked for August 2005 and had to use it by September 2005 or she would have to forfeit the ticket.
I said "yes" but I didn't even have a Passport, so there was a lot to do and organize. Thanks to Kate Murphy (Murf) and Ushi Grant for arranging the flights and accommodation, we were both able to fly out together on 1 August 2005 to our first stopover in London via Singapore.

Barb's next stopover was in Barcelona but I couldn't get a flight out of Barcelona so I went straight to Barb's next stopover in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and waited for her there. I got lost in New York on the way to Rio de Janeiro but that is another story (see my Journal).
We were able to fly out together from Rio de Janeiro to the rest of her stopovers in Santiago (Chile), Lima (Peru), Quito (Ecuador), Mexico City (Mexico), Los Angeles (California), Auckland (New Zealand) and back to Brisbane (Australia).

Before we left, we decided to to get out the movie, "The Motorcycle Diaries" a true story about a couple of blokes who in 1952 decided to ride a Norton 500 motorcycle from Buenos Aires across the Andes, along the coast of Chile, across the Atacama desert (Chile) to Cuzco, Machu Picchu and Lima in Peru, into the Peruvian Amazon and then Colombia and finishing up in Venezuela. The trip was over 13,000 Kilometres and it took them about eight months to do.
This movie gave us a taste of what we were going to see. So we had the taste, the tickets so we were ready to go. Hope you enjoy our story.
