Finally to Trier!
In and around Trier, Germany
Second time's a charm! We made it to Trier! We woke up and it was a beautiful day in Neubreucke! We were all pumped for a lovely day in Trier. As we drove along, we saw low clouds in the mountains far away and thought it was absolutely beautiful. ...Beautiful until you enter the cloud for a whole day! Sure enough, when we left Trier, it was warm, bright, and sunny again! I suppose we were just meant to spend the day in a cloud! HA!
We entered through the massive black gate (Porta Nigra), which was part of a wall that surrounded the entire city of Trier. The seven of us broke up into two groups, with myself, Steven, and Andrea in the slower-paced group.
We started off and paced a beautiful cathedral on the way to the ginormous pink statehouse. It had a lot of history and is now used for current political officials. There was a long reflection pond in front of the building, lined with statues of prominent political figures...and Moses. Andrea and I got to have a whirl at being important statues also. (Take a look at the pictures!) We all guessed that it would be beautiful in the spring/summer when everything's in bloom, as we assume everything would be!
That was on the way to one of the most impressive parts of Trier, Kaiserthermen, ruins of ancient Roman baths. One of the walls of the main building is remaining, with most of the rest being open. We thought that was all there was to look at, but then we saw a stairwell and decided to explore! It was the underground tunnel system that the Romans used to get around between sitting rooms and baths of the area. It was amazing walking down through it all! Be sure to check out those pictures.
We then mosied around the perimeter of the town toward the ancient Roman amphitheater. It was so much bigger than it looked in pictures, and there were paths that we could walk up to the top of the seating area, where part of the surrounding city wall used to be. Unfortunately, there weren't any remaining parts of the outer wall, but there was a neat picture that gave visitors an idea of the massiveness of it. We could also walk underground there, but it wasn't AS impressive. Really neat, nonetheless!
We all met back up at 4 pm to decide what to do next. Given that we were in a wet, cold cloud all day, it was pretty much a unanimous decision to hit the road! Even when the weather isn't so hot, we still have a great time because all the sites are so gorgeous!
More to come...
