Studying in a Field Afar
In and around United Kingdom
The following journal is designed for interested Rotarians to follow my year abroad as an Ambassadorial Scholar in Brighton, England. Due to the generosity of The Rotary Foundation, my sponsors from the Honolulu Rotary Club, District 5000 and my hosts from the Seaford Martello Rotary Club, District 1250, I have the opportunity to pursue a master’s degree in Anthropology of Development and Social Transformations at the University of Sussex.
The Ambassadorial Scholarship Program goals include “creating pockets of peace through international exchange of IDEAS; building meaningful international FRIENDSHIPS; sharing the universal love of FAMILY; and combining service and intellectual pursuits to create UNDERSTANDING and GOOD WILL.” The program aims to instill in scholars the Rotary ideal of “service as a basis of worthy enterprise” and encourage scholars to address the humanitarian needs of their communities as they move along in their personal and professional lives.
During my year as an “Ambassador of Goodwill,” I look forward to sharing with Rotarians my experience in Brighton to expand awareness of The Rotary Foundation’s educational programs. I am grateful for this opportunity and hope this journal provides my sponsoring club and other Rotarians with an understanding of my academic and Rotary-related pursuits.
