Australia: Journey Home, 2001.
In and around Brisbane, Australia
I am half Australian. I was born on February 18, 1947 in Elyria, Ohio to a mother who immigrated to the United States in 1946 as a War Bride following World War Two. During World War Two, many American servicemen met and married women in Britain and Australia. Following the war, many of these women emigrated to the United States to be with their American husbands who had returned to the States following the war. At the time of my birth in the United States, my mother was a British Subject. Australia was part of the British Commonwealth at that time. When the Australian Citizenship Act of 1948 went into effect, she became an Australian citizen even though she resided in the United States. Eventually, in 1951, she became a naturalized citizen of the United States. She passed away in June, 1998. In July, 2001, I began, what would become, a series of trips back to Australia and my mother's family. Prior to 2001, I had made two trips to Australia to visit family; one in 1951 and the other in 1970.
