Key West Oct 5 to Oct 9 2007.
In and around North America
Key West is a city of about 25,000 regular residents and additional number of temporary residents.
From about 1830 to the late 1800's Key West had the highest earnings per capita in North America. The reason for this was the major industry was wrecking. That is, salvaging the ships that wrecking on the reef. A peak year, 1856, there were close to a wreck a week. The Key West wreckers retrieve the cargo of these ships, put the cargo out for auction and keep between 25% and 40% of the results. Citizens of Key West not only made higher earnings than other North Americans but also had many more "luxury" items as they purchases the fine cargo at auction prices.
Steam powered ships and better navigational aids ended this business and Key West became normal.
