Bonjour from Tunisia!
In and around Tunisia
Bonjour de Tunis!
I am studying in french in Tunis (le capital) for 3 months. Completely different than anywhere else I have visited, Tunisia is mainly a muslim country. My first introduction to Tunisian culture so far has been one of both personal introspection (encouraged by trying Ramadan) and adventures.
Yesterday we met our host families. I am staying with 4 other students in a large villa with a pool; very comfortable accomodations! Today was my first day of school at l'Universitè de sept Novembre. (A very important date in Tunisian history, it was when Habib Bourgiba gave over his presidency to Ben ALi, the current president.
The food here is fantastic (when it is available; after sundown)! I wish I could bring back some fresh dates for everyone (they put honey butter and almonds inside them, mmmmm). Last night for our first meal with host families we had a traditional Tunisian spread of brik,(better than it sounds-a pastry filled with egg and veggies), obergene, soup, pizza, "chili?", rice, and a drink of some fruit with hazelnuts.
I'm looking forward to my stay here, and I will try my best to keep you all updated, although the keyboard is very different...this took over 15 minutes to type! As I feel with language, there is only room for improvement!
Love to you All,
Laura
