In and around Guatemala

The criteria for our winter trip.  It had to be warmer than San Francisco.  There shouldn't be any rain.  It had to be interesting.  It had to be fun. It had to be reasonably safe.   And finally, it had to be affordable.

After researching several locations we decided that Guatemala fit the bill perfectly.  It is home to two World Hertigage sites (Antigua and Tikal) and is considered one of the most affordable destinations in Central America.

Why Guatemala?

Although we were going in high season during Christmas and New Years it still was a very affordable destination.

This is the journal of our time in Guatemala.

I noticed your profile and was very interested in it. My wife and I are traveling to Guatemala this Dec. I was hoping you could help with some of the bottlenecks we are facing. We haven't found a single site that will help us make hotel bookings that are mid-range. I am reading through the Let's Go and Lonely Planet guides and it seems that if I need to book a bus ticket or a hotel room I can do it only by calling them. I wanted to know if you could advice some other options, before I start making those international calls. Your response is much appreciated.

BTW, I also noticed Daphne's Blog here. I have sent an email to Fransisco too. I'm guessing you guys are together, unless its a different Daphne. Thanks, Rav

Hi Rav We looked around for a site to book as well but ultimately ended up emailing the first hotel we stayed at in Antigua and reserving a room in advance. Worked out well. After the first hotel we called a day in advance as we traveled. GSM phone with a locally purchased SIM card is cheap and works really well there. Hope this helps and hope you have a great time -- great country. Cheers - Ken
