The biggest religious building in the world, Angkor Wat is only the start of it. There are hundreds of temples to explore, all in varying states of decay and jungle overgrowth. We decided to eschew the more usual tuk tuk and see them by our own power. This resulted in a 35km walk the first day, up at 5 to see the sun rise. And a 50km bike ride the next. Add in a few hundred thousand steps, extremely steep all in fairly bad condition (they are nearly 1000 years old) and some very uneven floors and you have a recipe for aching legs. We loved playing Lara Croft/Indiana Jones (depending on which generation you are) and scrambling up to the higher levels to check out the views and the amazing carving of hindu and buddhist stories.  Favourite temples were preah khan and ta prohm - the most overgrown  and reclaimed by the jungle. Huge trees just sprout out of bits of wall. Its amazing. Top Tip - eat out in the temple area and avoid the thousands of tour groups who go back to the town for posh lunches. It might be hot, but you get the temples almost to yourself. great
