Hey Brett Really depends on your budget and the time you have for the trip. I only had 9 weeks to do the trip so to get it all in I took a few flights - that gave me max time in all the places I wanted to be at. Of course I took a few buses as well - you got to for the experience. Country by country: In peru I flew Lima to Puerto Maldonado - dont think i would have taken the bus as it would have taken well over a day - teh flight back then was about $60. In Peru most of the one way flights seen to be the same cost. The buses there are not bad - decent sleepers, but you do have a lot of hairpens to encounter going over mountains so never a perfect sleep! In bolivia its pretty much all buses and on terrible roads. I did get a flight from La paz to santa cruz and then again from santa cruz to sucre to cut down on time. In Chile got a flight from san pedro to santiago as I dont think there is a lot in between and the bus journey is long - this flight is more expensive though - over $100 i think. Busing from Santiago to Mendoza is a must - great scenary. Also bused from Mendoza to BA - v good overnight bus. Generally busing in Argentina is meant to be v good and not too expensive - although i did fly from BA to Iguazu to cut down on time. Hope this helps Give us a shout if u have any more questions.

I'm looking into taking a trip with a similar itinerary in the next few months and one of the biggest questions I have is the best way to get from place to place...are the flights reasonably priced or are buses the way to go?
