Preparando a viajar
In and around Guatemala
Doing my best to recall my Spanish (learned over 13 !!! years ago in high school), I believe what I wrote in the journal title is "Preparing to travel!"
A well-earned trip !!! after a six-year stint that included a move across the country from my beloved Seattle to Atlanta, a marriage, one masters degree, a divorce, another masters degree, many, many! part-time jobs, the discovery of my vocation, many wonderful relationships built, with good measures of joy and pain and "life" all mixed in.
Soon I will be on my way to Guatemala City (where I will stay hopefully less than 10 hours) and then to see a lot of "Guate" as those in-the-know seem to call it and a bit of Honduras as well.
As I've been preparing for my adventure to Guatemala, and as I have lived the journey of the last several years, I have come across, at many different moments, as a gift from many different people, this poem, by Mary Oliver.
The Journey one day you finally knew what you had to do, and began, though the voices around you kept shouting their bad advice - though the whole house began to tremble and you felt the old tug at your ankles. "mend my life!" each voice cried. but you didn't stop. you knew what you had to do, though the wind pried with its stiff fingers at the very foundations, though their melancholy was terrible. it was already late enough, and a wild night, and the road full of fallen branches and stones. But little by little, as you left their voices behind, the stars began to burn through the sheets of clouds, and there was a new voice which you slowly recognized as your own, that kept you company as you strode deeper and deeper into the world, determined to do the only thing you could do - determined to save the only life that you could save.
The only response that seems fitting to this well-churched woman is "Amen!"
