20 countries, 12 months and a girlfriend who is scared of flying

In and around World

Well the time is almost here. We have days to go until we depart life as we know it and head around on an adventure around the world. The house has been rented out, tenants move in at the end of July so almost everything apart from the bare essentials has been packed into boxes and put in storage. The cat has a home for 12 months (thanks Kate) which just leaves a horse and a car to get rid of.

This is something that i've always wanted to do, unfortunately i've never had the chance until now due to circumstances at work or home. Don't get me wrong, i've already seen a lot of the world but getting off a plane to do a meeting and then getting back on it doesn't really count. I recall once going to New Zealand for 8 hours before heading back!

I don't know what it is about traveling but being able to see sights and experience new cultures has always been attractive to me so i couldn't believe it when Emma agreed to come with me. Now as the title of this blog points out Emma is scared of flying, she almost got arrested on a recent flight to Scotland for panicing on the plane, they didn't quite get the handcuffs out (normally she would enjoy this if not on the plane) but did move her right to the back so not to panic the other passengers.

It took a while to figure out where we wanted to go and which routes were possible. Currently we are heading to Canada, USA, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Panama, Brazil, Amazon (not really a country but sounds good), Chile, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, China, South Africa & Namibia.

During the past couple of weeks Emma has had to odd moment of doubt about this. She has never really travelled and leaving everything she knows must be very daunting for her. Neither of us know what to expect but at least i've survived away from home for long periods of time. Unfortunately there is very little i can do when she has these moments, i have always said that she must want to do this on her own and not feel she has to come because of me. I love her so much and i know she loves me. I also know that once we get going she will love it and that this trip will make us stronger as individuals and as a couple.

I'm going to miss friends and family, Friday nights down the pub with George and the creature comforts of home. I'm not going to miss commuting to London, shitty bosses and office politics, bad weather and high prices.

So the time is almost here. There will be more comments and thoughts to read from both of us and i do hope we can provide you with commentary and photos that don't remind you of going through your friends holiday snaps.

Hello to you both - Loving the inflatable Emm. I can see you two trying to row yourselves back to dry land - very funny. You're missing very little here, except great weather - the government's decision to move the UK to a 4 day week! NOT. Sounds like you're having a great time - thinking of you both. Love me xx

I am dying with envy !!!! I agree that getting planes for meetings is not really travelling (there is a saying in Spain that goes should travelling enligthen people, then railway ticket inspectors would be the wisest people on Earth ...). The route is really exciting. If you allow me a suggestion: visit Peru if you can, it is full of wonderful places. You have really taken high chances: by the end of it, she will be in love with planes or very far away from you, I can not see intermediate endings :-) :-) Post from time to time ...
