Astrologer in Peril: An Excursion To The Koh Tarutao National Marine Park

In and around Thailand

I lived in Chiang Mai, Thailand for 2 years. Chiang Mai is in the northwest of Thailand. It has 3 seasons: monsoon, winter and HOT!! The most common mode of transportation in Thailand is motorbike, and a friend there used to say that riding your motorbike in the hot season was like driving in a microwave.

As a result of being a teacher at an international school, I was given 3 weeks off during the HOT season. This time period coincides with the Songkran Water Festival. Songkran is the major national festival of Thailand, and Chiang Mai is nucleus of all  the festivities.

Now, I'm sure that sounds charming to the prospective tourist, but when you have masses of people in doorways with 6 foot speakers pounding techno from 10am -8pm,and firehoses full of water poised to douse any

unsuspecting passerby. If you think you are getting away from the madness by leaving the house, think again: There are throngs of people in EVERY doorway with 6 foot speakers and hoses. EVERYBODY is soaking wet. There are people in pickup trucks with hoses and buckets, dousing everyone who drives by(remember, motorbikes are the most common form of transportation). Traffic is at a standstill. You're bombarded by techno from all directions.

Needless to say, it's a perfect time for a teacher to get away from the heat AND Songkran, so I decided to take my first trip to the fabulous islands in Southern Thailand. I decided to voyage to the Koh Tarutao National Marine Park, which are located in Satun, the southernmost province on the Andaman coast.
