A Frank Lloyd Wright Journey
In and around Somerset, United States
Frank Lloyd Wright began his architectural career in the 1890s. Throughout his life he was a force to be reckoned with in modern architecture and in the year of his death, at age 92, he was still creating some of the most startling and innovative buildings of his time. He was also a rebel in his personal life. In 1909, he left his wife and six children for the wife of one of his clients and the scandal was front page news in the Chicago Tribune. By the mid 1930s, it looked as if his career was over, until he was asked to create a vacation home in the Pennsylvania woods in such a way that the waterfalls that the family enjoyed would be preserved. He built the home right over the falls, and the house is called, naturally enough, Fallingwater.
We drove to Somerset, Pennsylvania, where we stayed overnight, and the next morning visited the memorial for the passengers on Flight 93, and then headed south to Fallingwater.
