First trip independent of Gene!

In and around Idar-Oberstein, Germany

Let me give a little back story first...When we arrived in Germany, our military contact person is a man named Gene, who is the Civil Misconduct Officer. He's a little spacy and very unique (for lack of a better word). He didn't seem too concerned about wasting our time in his office, whether or not we actually had a bed to sleep in, or our nauseaus stomachs on those hilly turns, not to mention his different and often off-colored humor. Needless to say, the group was definitely ready for a break from Gene!

So on our first trip independent of Gene, we traveled to the neighboring city of Idar-Oberstain via train (15 minutes). We barely made the train, but were treated to a free ride since we didn't have time to buy tickets and no one came to sell them to us. The town was beautiful, even though it rained the entire time we there! We looked at local shops, had some more local food, and climbed to the top of a mountain where a castle rests. The hike up was a lot of fun with beautiful views and easy walking with back and forth paths climbing the side of the mountain. At almost every point along the walk up, all of Idar-Oberstein was visible. It was breathtaking.
