Alberta is a province of striking contrasts. Highway 2 is a four lane limited access road running through the central section of the province and when you travel between the two major cities, Calgary and Edmonton, you will often notice, towards the east, vast stretches of level country with few trees, fading off to the distant horizon and, at the same time, to the west, the jagged outline of the Rocky Mountains, the first of a line of mountain ranges stretching all the way to the Pacific Ocean, hundreds of miles away.
