We set off on our road trip on New Years day in the rain again. We headed over the Canterbury plains towards the mountains. After a couple of hours travelling through some pretty spectacular mountain roads we arrived at Arthur’s pass and after a spot of lunch we headed over the pass towards the west coast. The weather was clear and sunny on the other side of the mountains and we drove through the hills and over various rivers until we reached Reefton, a small town which looked like it was from the American wild west. The town had a big river running through it which was used as a bit of a beach by visitors.

After a bit of a break there we headed onwards veering back towards the mountains to get to Hanmer Springs, a town famous for its thermal spa and pools, naturally heated water. When we arrived there it was back towards the east coast so unsurprisingly the weather had turned a bit sour again. Even so the town and pools were very busy so we decided we’d have a bit of a rest but wouldn’t go in the pools. Then we set off on the final stint of our journey to Kaikoura.

About 90km from Kaikoura was a sign saying “last petrol for 75km” we looked at our petrol and seeing it was low thought we’d better be safe than sorry and fill up. However, it was New Years Day and the petrol station in question was closed.

“oh well, at least the petrol light isn’t on”

No sooner had we said that, the petrol light started flashing. We had no idea how far the car could go once the light came on so we had to decide whether to turn back and find an open station or just push on to Kaikoura and hope we make it. We decided to carry on and after a bit of a nerve racking journey we arrived in Kaikoura and filled up the car.

We found some accommodation and got a late tea of fish and chips as we were by the seaside.
