Hello All,
Well I managed to survive my trip to Ayres Rock and sleeping "under the stars" for two nights. The trip was brilliant the sleeping part wasn't!!!! Anyway we were picked up at 6am from our hostel and had to drive 5 hours to Kings Cannon, our first stop. It was a 3 hour hike round the Cannon and it was so tiring but brill! The first 15 mins of the hill was called "Heart attack Hill" and it was awful, couldn't hardly breath by the end of it, so unfit!!!! Anyway we hiked all round it and it was so cool, it was massive. After that we drove another 2 hours to our "camp" so to speak. Now as it starts to get dark and we are driving along we can see lightening in the distance, which was actually quite cool! However, what was not cool was that our guide thought it was heading in our direction and said we wouldn't be able to get a fire started and cook dinner if it started to rain! Great so we had to go to this resort and ask if we could use their facilities but they said no, so apparently that was not a big deal and we headed for the bush!!! So at this time I'm not happy, on top of having to sleep outside, there is a strom coming and we are actually camping in the middle of no where - no toilets/showers nothing! I'm thinking what am I doing!
So we get to camp, and we are told to look for wood to start a fire, after ages looking for wood in the bush (I was trying my best to look for wood and not spiders and snakes) we got a fire started and cooked dinner which was camel!!!! Great, fantastic I'm thinking this has just topped my day!! Anyway had the camel, which was ok, just like mince really!!! But we are all round the fire on our sleeping bags eating camel, and a massive spiders crawls past my right foot! I did well not to stand up and scream but that put me off my camel! Then I saw about 4 more and some giant centipede thing with some hook on its tail!!! So thought the best option was too drink some more beers and hopefully I will fall asleep easier!!!
However that did not work! I got in to my sleeping bag and it was horrible! I was so hot and claustrophobic! Plus you could put this flap over your head so the spiders wont crawl over your face but when I did that I felt like I was in a coffin! So after 3 hours out there I had to give up and retreat to the van for 2 hours sleep and then we were up again! But Nick managed to stay there all night!!!
Next day we went to the Olga's and walked round them, they were cool too, everything is so much bigger that the pictures!!! Then it was on to Ayres Rock, and we watched the sunset which was brill! The rock is huge and watching the sun go down was great, you could see it changing colours!!! Then it was another night at camp!! But this camp was better it had toilets and a shower and even some picnic benches!!! Plus I only saw one spider before I went to sleep under the stars, so that was a bit better! Anyway I was so pleased I managed the whole night out there, granted I didn't get much sleep but I managed to stay there the whole night - I was so proud!!!! Then it was off to watch sunrise at Ayres Rock which again was cool!
After sunrise we walked the whole way round the rock and it was brill, it took about 2 hours because it is so huge but it was good fun! We weren't really allowed to climb the rock, people were doing it, but our guide wasn't keen on us doing and said it was disrespectable to the Aborigines! Apparently climbing the rock is a sign that a boy has become a man, and they don't like us doing it! Plus there are loads of signs saying not to climb, but the deal breaker for me was the fact that 35 people have died climbing it! So walking round it was enough for us!!!
So that was our trip in the outback! It was brilliant best thing we have done so far, despite the sleeping outside! We got to see all the major sights and got some fab pictures! (I've attached some for you but wont bore you with too many).
We flew out of Ayres Rock and our now in Cairns, which is lovely and it is nice to be a cool city for change! So we have been a few days here and then we are going to start making our way down the east coast!
So again hope all is good back home and everyone is well! And hope you all had a good weekend!!!
Take care and hopefully hear from you soon
Miss ya!
Love Cara xx

Hay Cara I did get your photos, just couldn't see the email because it went to my junk emails at work. Keep sending the link and I'll keep checking. I'm so shocked you even tried the Camel! Is this the same girl who used to only eat cheese on toast and chicken! Wow. Well I suppose it was either that or nothing eh! :) Anyway back to work. Mind the spiders, take care. Lidia
