Having completed our 3-day trek, it’s obvious why the Abel Tasman Coastal Track is the most tramped in the country:

1) The scenery is unbelievably amazing

2) The walk is relatively easy

3) The track is very accessible

Had we known how easy (and affordable) it is to take water taxis from bay to bay, we might have opted for that rather than lugging our 50 lb backpacks over ~40 km. Of course, hiking is always good, and the views were eye-popping, but we may have had a slightly different experience sans the extra weight! Surprisingly, despite the fairly easy terrain, we were all hurting pretty bad when we finished the track. Blisters on our feet, wet boots and a bad gash on Sara’s foot owing to two poorly-timed low-tide crossings, and forgetting an entire bag of food, may have all contributed to our slightly weakened spirits.

Psychology also played a large role during this hike. We were wracked with jealousy every time we passed (or were passed by) people tramping in flip flops carrying tiny day packs (or nothing at all.) And we’re not talking sport sandals – a good number of people were wearing cheap foam thongs, and we even saw a couple of guys tramping barefoot!!! Another amusing observation was how clean/perfume/deodorant -smelling these people were – hope they got a good whiff of us, ha-ha-ha!

We finished with a great sense of accomplishment. Enjoy the pics – we hope we managed to capture a little bit of the incredible landscape here.
