More information on St. Stephen's Day
The holiday spirit is continued with the day after Christmas celebrated as St. Stephen's Day. Another well-known name for the festival is Boxing Day. The tradition of giving decorated boxes of food, money and gifts to charitable institutions or the needy began in the 16th century in England when the aristocracy gave their servants presents. It has progressed into an occasion of joy and thanksgiving and a community event.
